Toshiba's smartphone roadmap leaked, features huge touchscreens

Rumors by Ricky Cadden on Tuesday April 14, 2009.

Please note that this story is based upon rumor and/or speculation.

TechBlog.gr has scored a slide that reportedly shows us Toshiba's mobile device plans for the rest of 2009. The slide starts with the TG01, a previously-announced smartphone powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, with a 4.1-inch WVGA (800x480 pixels) resolution touchscreen display. The Toshiba TG01 is powered by Qualcomm's SnapDragon chipset.

According to the unofficial document, the TG02 will follow shortly, adding IPX4 water resistance to the TG01's already fantastic features. The TG03 is apparently planned to launch a few months later, adding a 3-channel speaker for enhanced video playback.

In addition to the TG0x series, Toshiba is reportedly planning the K01 and KO2 for Q4 2009 and Q1 2010. The K01 appears to be similar to the TG01, though with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that adds a few millimeters to the thickness, and also switches over to a high-resolution capacitive display. The K02 appears to be a clamshell QWERTY model, with the keyboard on the inside and a secondary touchscreen display on the outside. Both the KO1 and KO2 supposedly feature 3G connectivity, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and are powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional.

[It is worth noting that Windows Mobile 6.5 does not currently support capacitive touchscreen displays, and is very unlikely to ever do so, so this slide is probably incorrect in one way or another. -editor]

The star of the show, however, is the L01, which sports a 7-inch WVGA (800x480 pixel) resolution touchscreen display and optional detached QWERTY keyboard. This smartphone is also powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, as far as we can tell. Toshiba has shown off prototypes that look similar to the L01, powered by Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC). Fuel Cell(INFO) technology would possibly allow the L01 to operate for over a week on a single charge. Toshiba has also previously promised consumer devices powered by fuel cells by March 2010.
