Possible new iPhone referenced in latest firmware

Rumors by Ricky Cadden on Thursday January 29, 2009.

Please note that this story is based upon rumor and/or speculation.

Industrious readers at MacRumors.com have found an interesting reference in the new Apple iPhone firmware that was released yesterday. Apparently, the new firmware references 'iPhone2,1', which is decidedly different from the 'iPhone1,2' that currently is used to refer to the iPhone 3G. Also, the fact that the reference is iPhone2,1 and not iPhone1,3 suggests a potentially drastic change from the existing model.

In addition, an anonymous iPhone developer that uses PinchMedia to serve ads in his iPhone application has noticed two hits from this unannounced model showing up in his monthly report. While both of these discoveries could point to a 3rd generation iPhone being announced soon, any details would be pure speculation. [via Boy Genius Report]
