Boxwave ClearTouch and miniSync product review
Review by Siddharth Raja on Saturday July 24, 2004.
Boxwave recently sent me a bunch of products to test out on my P900 and HP 2210 PDA. They make accessories such as sync cables and screen protectors. They sent me the ClearTouch Screen protector, miniSync cable, the miniSync Car Charger, and the Battery Adapter .
Like many of you, I have bought and thrown away a heap of screen protectors. Most of the ones I've bought have lasted about 2 days before they start getting annoying due to a poor writing surface, bubbles, or attracting too much dust. Although screen protectors are, in concept, very handy to have, protecting your screen from scratches, fingerprint marks, and general knocks and bumps, none had actually fulfilled their promise for me. That is until I got the BoxWave ClearTouch screen protector. Michael had been raving about these for some time now so we arranged for BoxWave to send me a screen protector for the P900 and the Ipaq 2210.

My P900 with the screen protector
Opening the package, I was pleased to find a small guide which demonstrated how to install, remove, and clean the screen protector. The actual screen protector is quite different than most of the ones I've used in the past, which felt a little "sticky" and caused the stylus to drag on the surface. The others were also very flimsy, and stuck on themselves almost as easily as sticky tape. The ClearTouch holds its shape once opened, and this makes installing it very easy. I cleaned off the screen of my P900 with a soft cloth, making sure that there were no particles of dust left on it, and installed the ClearTouch according to the instructions. The screen protector was generally looking good, but there were some small bubbles that needed to be taken out. I carefully pressed the bubbles out using a credit card and was left with an almost perfect surface! There were still a few bubbles left around the edges where my credit card couldn't reach, and after some time trying to take them out, I decided to leave them be. The next day I noticed that all the bubbles had worked their way out of the screen protector and the surface was perfect. So there's a tip for those of you who are planning on buying one of these.
The best feature of the ClearTouch is not its easy installation, but its writing surface. The ClearTouch gives you the feeling of writing on paper, and produces none of the friction of previous screen protectors i've used. You will notice a slight drop in brightness after you install the ClearTouch, but this can usually be countered by turning the screen brightness up on devices that support that. The 2210 supports such a feature, but my P900 doesn't, so this is something that you will have to live with. I would estimate the drop to be at most 5%, and not something you would notice after a while. The ClearTouch makes up for this, though, by making the screen less prone to glare if you're out in the sun. All up, I'd call it a fair trade.
While the ClearTouch is priced higher than other screen protectors, at US$12.95 vs. $8.95 for most others, it is simply the best screen protector we have tried and both Michael and I highly recommend it.
