Review of the Motorola Rival QWERTY slider phone for Verizon
Review by Marc Lynde on Wednesday August 05, 2009.

Motorola A455 Rival |
Motorola A455 Rival |
The Motorola A455 Rival is a compact QWERTY device that provides users with an abundance of features that won't break the bank.
As the name might imply, the phone is geared to compete with the likes of LG's enV3 and Samsung's Alias 2. I find it more useful to look at this device on its own, though, as it seems likely to fall into the hands of completely different users. At its basic level, the Rival features an external display that allows users to make calls using a touchscreen and a full QWERTY keypad when the phone is slid open. The phone is targeted to a youthful audience but is suitable for anyone looking for a phone in its category.
Physical Aspects
The Motorola Rival is a slider phone with touchscreen capability and a full QWERTY keyboard. The device is available in either silver or purple. The model I reviewed was the purple model (although I personally prefer silver) and it is a sharp looking device with a compact form factor at 97mm x 51mm x 18mm (3.82in x 2.01in x 0.71in) that felt light in my pocket at 125g (4.41oz).
The touchscreen is not full featured and is only used to dial numbers and use the two corner softkey spots that are indicated by white lights. In order to bring up the numbers, however, you have to hit the dedicated dial pad key above the send button. The buttons respond with faint vibrations and I found that input was completely accurate. Other than that, the four-way d-pad and center button control most of the phone's functions, apart from those making use of the QWERTY keyboard inside.
While the phone is feature rich, my initial impressions with build quality were less than impressive and I wonder how the phone would stand up to average abuse. It feels rather plasticky and is not snug when closed, which bothered me.
The 2.2-inch 65K color TFT (176 x 220 pixel) display is viewed in portrait mode when you slide the phone open. I think the display is average in quality, but far from stellar as pictures aren't perfectly clear and some items can appear pixilated.
As I said, the front of the phone features the touchscreen with two touch keys, send and end keys, a back key, dial pad key, and the d-pad and its center select button. The right side of the device has a camera key, a voice key for using voice dialing or voice recording, and a lock key that activates the device lock. The left side has a dedicated speakerphone button and volume keys. The Rival uses micro-USB for charging and USB connectivity, which I really like. Furthermore, as this device is geared for teens who may use the music functionality, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack that is sure to please.

I want this phone, but need to stick w/ AT&T. Wish they had this one. Want the slide-to-the-side QWERTY in a Motorola phone.

I loved the phone at first. It has some good features but I had to replace it due to manufacture defaults after the first month. The screen stopped working and the power button and directional pad quit. I never dropped it...I took care of it but it just quit on me
It has its pros though..the qwerty keypad is nice and I love its nice compact design but I much prefer my new enV3.
word to the wise...if you get this phone : GET INSURANCE. it'll save so much trouble
michael @ 11:23:23AM EDT on Monday October 19, 2009
this phone is alright. it worked really well the first couple weeks, but it's slowly started to fall apart. it freezes up alot, it randomly shuts down, and the screen tweaks out often, (the touch screen keys, when the phone is slide out, start selecting menus on their own lol) i haven't dropped it or anything whatsoever. i would've rather gotten an enV3 or an enV touch. i don't recommend it.

omg this is the best phone ive ever had! everyone thinks it isnt good because its a motorola, but its great! ive had this phone for over 2-3 months and its great!. i mean it has problems from time to time but every phone does! i really like this phone. good job guys and/or girls :)
billy @ 2:42:24PM EDT on Friday October 23, 2009
this phone was great and all when i first got it, like it was awesome, but then the graphics card i guess is going up in it and the lag is terrible. i treat my phone pretty well, so i dont know if it is the type of phone thats the problem or if i just dont take care of it.
britt @ 10:41:15PM EDT on Saturday October 24, 2009
phone is awful...this is my 2nd in a month!! the hinges keep breaking and its very annoying..it will also get stuck between screens when you open the keyboard...dont get it!
ACE @ 8:50:37PM EDT on Thursday October 29, 2009
I have this phone, sometimes i like it, sometimes i dont. Only had a bad drop once and before the drop it was freaking out on me. The touch screen buttons would start pressing them selves and the phone will every now and then freeze up completely.
It can be a good phone if you have the patience to deal with that sorta stuff, but i dont.
kalanikaau @ 9:03:07PM EST on Friday November 6, 2009
This POS is a lesson in frustration. Verizon has sent me 3 of these things, all 3 dial touchscreens lock up intermittently, seemingly when you need it most.
Avoid this thing all all costs !
horrible @ 10:08:15PM EST on Monday November 9, 2009
the motorola rival seems good at first, but it has a slew of annoying problems. One, it randomly turns on and off in my pocket, since the power button is extremely easy to press accidentally. Two, the software is SO.... FREAKING...... SLOW. It lags like no other. Finally, the touch screen is too easy to activate. I deleted like 4 contacts accidentally the other day while... not doing anything. My phone was in my pocket, and unawares, I was deleting random contacts any time I moved. WTF. The phone is okay, other than these three quite major flaws.
Carly @ 8:26:15PM EST on Wednesday November 18, 2009
I just got this phone and it is really great but i dont know how to use the smiley button
kaitlyn @ 1:25:56PM EST on Saturday November 21, 2009

alysha @ 4:40:44PM EST on Monday November 23, 2009
when this phone was sent out by motorola there was a soft ware issue, the company is aware of this but is currently doing nothing to compensate for it . i have the cell phone and have already sent it in once because everytime i sent a text message the phone turner off. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE! customer service is useless and you will regret it ! i sure do.
Kim @ 5:51:48PM EST on Thursday November 26, 2009
I'm on my 3rd Rival. It sucks. Screen went out on first one. It would freeze, the "puzzle," then final went grey. Slider came loose twice on "factory reconditioned" replacements. It was not dropped. It is absolutely the most frustrating & worst cell phone I have ever had. DON'T PURCHASE!!!!!
emily @ 5:52:23PM EST on Tuesday December 1, 2009

PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS PHONE! I just took my 4th one back to Verizon for replacement. The touch screen went out on the 1st 3 and the slider part fell completely off the 4th. These things are junk! The guy at Verizon said they quit carrying them because of all the problems they have.
Joanna @ 11:09:15AM EST on Friday January 8, 2010
I got this phone September 6th, less than two weeks later I was back at verizon for a second one. The first one had a glitch in the software and was receiving messages without letting me view them. About a month ago my screen on the 2nd one went blank and froze. I tried to make a call and it came back on. It froze often after that though and it shuts its self off. Yesterday the screen quit on me again and now the software is turning the volume on and off on its own. Previously it turned off my voicemail sensor its self. I didnt even know there was a voicemail sensor when i took it to verizon to get that taken care of. I highly reccommend not getting this phone unless you make sure you have insurance on it. Lucky all three of my phones have still been under warrenty. It has its perks but the software is a huge down fall.

tanaya @ 9:02:18PM EST on Sunday January 24, 2010
this phone is a piece of crap..this is my second one and it's already starting to break and i just got it at the begining of the week!
brandon1878 @ 7:39:12PM EST on Wednesday January 27, 2010
i have this phone right now, and by far... it is honestly the worst phone ive had, it lags way to much and it has poor quality. it freezes a lot, and the touch screen isnt that great. it breaks way to easy and ive never dropped it yet, the slide breaks in half beacuse its only held on in the middle. if your thinking about getting this phone, i would reconsider your choice and get the samsung intensity. you still have the keyboard but also push buttons so you can text on t9 text, that phone is still a little lagy but its fine. if your willing to put out some money for a phone then i would prefer the chocolate touch, samsung rouge, blackberry curve, or the nokia twist. there all great phones but im sorry, this phone just isnt the greastest. im not pleased with this phone at all.
j15 @ 10:07:58AM EST on Friday January 29, 2010
Worst phone ever
Melly @ 2:04:33PM EST on Sunday January 31, 2010
I can't seem to get Twitter to respond to this phone - is there software for it or does it not support Twitter. Verizon store in Liberty, TX is NO help - they are a poor excuse for customer service - they act like it is your fault when something doesn't work and told me a few months ago that the phone can not be set up for any other email accounts except yahoo and gmail - well I figured that one out and got it set up by myself!! Once again anyone know about using Twitter on the Rival????
jessi @ 6:45:36PM EST on Sunday January 31, 2010
this phone sucks, after having it for only a couple weeks it started having problems. it freezes all the time, it randomly shuts off, its battery dies quickly, the slider is wobbly, it changes its volume and during a call if u get a txt it hangs up. it sucks!
nickj @ 6:28:01PM EST on Wednesday February 3, 2010
worst phone ever screen is way to fragile if you put too much pressure on it it will go black and this has happened to me twice... dont get it
