Samsung launches Omnia II i8000 touchscreen phone with large AMOLED display

Snapshot by Brian James Kirk on Monday June 15, 2009.

Samsung has announced the Samsung Omnia II i8000, a Windows Mobile 6.1-powered smartphone with 3G and WiFi connectivity, a 5 megapixel camera with camcorder, and internal memory available in either 2GB, 8GB or 16GB options.

The Omnia II features a 3.7-inch 65k color WVGA AMOLED (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen display that uses 65 percent less power than a traditional TFT display. The display has also been improved with advanced resistive touch features that create more accurate touch response.

The Omnia II uses Samsung's new TouchWiz 2.0 interface. The OS includes 3D Cube multimedia effects, a motion responsive user interface that includes accelerometer controls, and a smart unlock feature that allows users to use gestures to open particular apps from the lock screen. The Windows Mobile 6.1 base operating system is upgradable to 6.5 when Microsoft releases it.

The device's 5 megapixel camera can take vivid pictures and can shoot DVD-like videos with 480p resolution recording and playback.

The Samsung Omnia II i8000 will be available from Verizon in a CDMA version in the future. Pricing and availability have not been announced for either the Verizon version or the GSM/UMTS version of the Omnia II.

S0N @ 9:35:46AM EDT on Monday August 31, 2009

@Matt - not specified but skyfire is a free full web browser that has flash and java for video sites
@Goody - hallre, there is third party software for myspace and facebook apps
@Robert - obviously those "Best Buy" shots were incorrect (they also had incorrect release date on the Tour which came out already
@quiquem - I would think somewhere in the near future (some articles state the dropping of vzw phone prices are a hint) and everywhere is declaring verizon wireless as the holder.

Phone for dummies..not for pro @ 10:38:44PM EDT on Wednesday September 23, 2009
