Nokia unveils 6216 Classic with NFC for secure wireless transactions

Snapshot by Brian James Kirk on Thursday April 23, 2009.

Nokia has announced the 6216 Classic, a fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) candybar device for convenient sharing of content and for wireless, secure payment and ticketing transactions. The 6216 supports quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA (850/2100MHz) data connectivity.

NFC allows the device to store a users' credit card and other important information securely on a SIM card. When making payments or providing entry into events, the phone can be swiped in front of a contactless terminal that automatically deducts a payment from the user's credit card account or reads important information such as the details of a ticket for a concert or movie.

Powered by S40 5th Edition Feature Pack 1, the 6216 features a 2 megapixel digital camera, stereo FM radio and music player. Users can save media on microSD cards with the integrated card slot and listen to music using Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR with support for stereo headsets.

The Nokia 6216 Classic will be available in the third quarter for EUR 150 (US$196) before tax and subsidies.
