Review of Samsung's a867 Eternity touchscreen cell phone for AT&T

The Samsung Eternity is a full-touchscreen device that has recently landed on AT&T's shelves. The Eternity features a 3 megapixel camera, built-in MediaFLO antenna for mobile TV, and a built-in GPS receiver for use with the AT&T Navigator service. After spending some time with the Eternity, we take a look at how well this TouchWiz-equipped cell phone works in the real world.
Physical Aspects
The Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity comes in a classy black and chrome color scheme that looks good in any environment. The front of the phone is made up almost entirely of the touchscreen display, and thus is glossy, attracting fingerprints to show off later. There is a chrome ring around the edges of this cell phone, and the entire back plate is a textured matte black plastic. Overall, I really liked the design of the phone.
Despite being cased mostly in plastic, the Samsung Eternity feels really good in the hand. At 109.2mm x 55.9mm x 12.7mm (4.3" x 2.2" x .5") it's quite small, allowing it to be easily used one-handed, despite all controls being touchscreen-based. Despite being a slightly hefty 110.6g (3.9oz), the Eternity feels somewhat hollow, as if there is quite a bit of free space inside it. The handset is weighted slightly heavier towards the bottom, which further enhances the in-hand feel.
As mentioned, the front of the Samsung SGH-a867 Eternity is mostly covered by the large 3.2" touchscreen display. There are, however, three buttons along the bottom edge of the phone, providing send, end, and back functions. The 'End' key pulls double duty as the power button, so you can easily turn the phone on and off. On the top edge of the Eternity, there is a single 'Hold' button, used to quickly lock the touchscreen from accidental keypresses. Along the right edge of the phone, towards the top, is the standard 3.5mm audio port, which is definitely a welcome feature. Below this is the application switcher button, and below that, the dedicated camera key.
The microphone is located along the bottom edge of the Samsung Eternity, and along the left edge is the proprietary power/data/headset multi-jack. Also, the volume rocker is located towards the top of the left edge. The 3 megapixel camera is located on the back of the Eternity, and the entire back panel slides down and out to offer access to the battery and SIM card slot. There is a microSD slot, though it is frustratingly located behind the back panel and requires removal of the battery to change the card.

it looks like a good phone but has alot of downsides. i'd rather have the nokia 5800 to be honest.

Nice review! I like the LG Insight a little better. But after reading this article it's tuff to decide. Check out www.touch-screenz.com for the truth

How does it stack up as a stolen iPhone replacement?
Lollie Dot Com @ 11:49:52AM EDT on Thursday April 16, 2009
It's the most beautiful piece of jewelry I've ever owned. It's my all time favorite candy bar and it's inedible! I join the world in wishing it had voice dial and auto focus and make no mistake about it, I have fallen crazy, mad in love with this big screen tv/computer/phone/camera/recorder/mp3 player... etc. etc. Oh yeah, one more thing it lacks is a bathroom. I wish it had a bathroom. It doesn't. I still love it. :)&-=

I recently purchased the eternity and loved it until I got home and figured out that it doesn't have speed or voice dial. For such a nice phone you would think it wouldn't be such a long process to make a call. Had I known, I probably would have passed on the phone.

Poor camera quality?!? coming from a 4 yr old Motorola Razr, these camera shots look awesome
Michael Oryl @ 1:29:39PM EDT on Tuesday April 28, 2009
Well, coming from a 30 year old red Radio Flyer wagon, a Ford Focus would seem like a race car. But compared to other modern cars, it wouldn't seem all that fast. I think that is the point being made with the camera quality statement. Compared to other current devices....

Note, regarding the cable: the samsung cable is proprietary, t-mobile sells it (tell them for a t639 if they ask) for $10.00, you can get it for about 5.00 online. A link for pc studio is :http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.samsung.com%2Fus%2Fsupport%2Fdownload%2FsupportDown.do%3Fmodel_nm%3DSGH-A707%26mType%3DSW%26vType%3DL%26disp_nm%3DSync(SGH-a707)&ei=CzL-SeCkEpWjtge93d2RBg&usg=AFQjCNHo_h_Zj5Xn0C93zYDar8rtPBiIlA&sig2=CCr2V0MEvbEY0tIC6nc5ZQ
it works for ALL samsung phones.
ANd I think that since I already have 3 cables for my older (tmobile) samsung, and since I just got two other new samsuns, this eternity may be a better match for me then the a767(propel) ALSO by samsung.

Hey my pictures are awesome. Emailed camp pics to the school and had teachers calling to ask what kind of camera I used, told them my phone and now they want one. LOVE the qwerty board...can see it!

This phone is horrible. Everyone you will lend it to wont know how to use it. This has the WORST touch screen ever and I would reccomend you not to buy the eternity. You have to callibrate it almost after every time you send a text
Stick @ 12:20:03PM EDT on Wednesday May 27, 2009
I bought mine about 2 months ago, and it has been horrible. The touch screen has to be pressed several times to work, the max volume on the phone is too low to work when at highway speeds inside a vehicle, the camera is horrid in its quality, it lacks voice recognition and speed dial.
Last night, it decided to change itself to a speaker phone, and not work in any other settings, then it stopped working. I've pulled the battery, and can't get it to reset.
For anyone looking at this phone, I would pass and get something that is higher quality, this phone has been terrible for me.

(at&t)i thought this phone was great but i have had it replaced 3 times in 2 months, the touch screen is great untill you have to calibrate it every other message, and i have 4 different blue tooth earpieces they all worked well for a week then i have to hold all of them close to the phone for them to work properly all three phones have done the same thing and all my blue tooth work great on my wifes samsung (sprint)is this just me or is any one else having this problem with the bluetooth and schreen

My older phone finally died after 5 years of use. So I have the Eternity for about a week now. Let me first say that I am a senior and my needs are different than younger folks that text a lot.
I am blown away by the features the new phones have and I am always amazed at new additional features that I keep discovering. There is one basic complaint that do have and that are the exorbitant costs from ATT
for any little extras. Speed dialing for example must gotten thru the carrier. Data costs dearly. Better wallpaper may not be needed but I would like a louder ring in a noisy environment. This must be down loaded!
This may be good for young people that have no intention of saving their money, but for a limited income as a retiree it hurts.
The phone itself sounds a bit muffled and the camera's delay is annoying. Otherwise I'm delighted with it
jenny @ 7:08:51PM EDT on Sunday June 14, 2009
i have the eternity and i love it! u can text 3 different ways and all my friends love it! although the phone does not have speed dial, if u eneter a phone number on the contact list, and start typing it on the screen a little pop up will tell u all the possibilities of that number

Got Eternity 4 days ago. Downloaded 200 pg manual and spent the weekend reading manual looking for speed or voice dial. Couldn't find any. I am in agreement with Janice above that if I had know there were no speed or voice dial on the phone I would have picked something else. Now if don't mind having to look at your screen and punch 3,4,5 keys to make a call then the rest of the phone is GREAT. Great pictures. I have not been able to seen email to text message on phone yet either but that is probably me.
Reverand Dave @ 6:43:57AM EDT on Tuesday June 30, 2009
It is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever owned. The back keeps falling off. The music player is as sorry as one can get. On a scale of 1 to 10. I give it a minus 5.
sam @ 4:35:35PM EDT on Friday July 24, 2009
i read all the comments, and i disagree with most of the bad ones. i've had the eternity for three months and i haven't calibrated it since i got it. it works great. the volume is perfect and i can change the vibration amount, which is great. i love how you could type three different ways and how you have the widget on the side. the back does not come off easy for me but easy enough to take off when you need to. it has great battery power and stays charged for more than two days. and this is coming from someone who texts 24/7. also, it has cool little things that just add to the quality of the phone, for example, the bottom lights up any color you want, when you get a text or a call and there is a free application called "Tumbling Dice" and you could shake the phone and it is virtual, realistic dice. and an other thing is, how you drag to scroll. i just love the phone, overall and all my friends do, as well!
DTEX @ 6:08:46PM EDT on Friday July 31, 2009
SPEED DIAL! If you press the green answer call button once, you will go to your recent calls list. If you press and hold the green answer call button, it automatically dials the last person you called.

Can have voice dial feature the Samsung SGH-A867 (Eternity) ?. If don't, do exist an update that can let the phone to get that feature ?
timt @ 4:02:41PM EDT on Thursday October 22, 2009
I love it! Its great, in my opion the camera isn't that bad. I think, if you try it you'll like it!!!!
neh2040 @ 2:35:03PM EDT on Tuesday October 27, 2009
If I would have known this phone didn't have speed dial, I would not have purchased it. The sales clerk said I could pay extra for voice recognition - Rigghhhttt, like I'm gonna do that. She could have explained there is no speed dial. This is my first and last Samsung I will ever purchase.
nicoleveronica:) @ 9:46:30PM EST on Monday December 7, 2009
I've had this phone for almost a year now. i love this phone, the touch works amazing. it has its weird tweaks but what phone doesn't? its tweaks includes, when it jams itself it starts over. that's it! there is no speed dial, can't change the default picture when phone is locked. great battery! great service! i'm 17 and this is the best phone i've gotten so far, and thats alot of phones!
chris @ 10:19:36PM EST on Monday December 14, 2009
Ok. I have this phone and the camera definitely takes better pictures than that. He didn't use night mode on the indoor shots. And you always have to hold the camera as still as possible, or rest it on something. I love taking pictures and i print out clear sharp 8 x 10's!

The phone is garbage. I'm on my second Eternity since July and now I'm having problems with this phone. The keyboard sticks. It works great for a month or two then the problem starts. I have really push some of the numbers or letters to get them to work. I wouldn't recommand this phone at all.
