Motorola ZINE ZN5 5 megapixel cameraphone review
Review by Michael Oryl on Sunday November 16, 2008.
Motorola ZINE ZN5 |

Motorola ZINE ZN5 |
The Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 was a long time in coming. The initial announcement that Kodak and Motorola made regarding a co-developed cameraphone ran across the wire over 2.5 years before the ZN5 made it to the Chinese market just barely in time for the Beijing Summer Olympic games earlier this year.
Now that the MOTOZINE ZN5 is available from T-Mobile USA, we've managed to get a hold of one to put through its paces. Read on to learn just how well the ZN5 does as both a phone and a 5 megapixel point and shoot camera.
The body style of the ZN5 is similar to that of other recent Motorola handsets like the RAZR2 and the Z9. It has a parallelogram profile and is relatively thin. A bulge on the back makes extra room for the autofocus camera lens and the sliding lens cover that activates the camera. The side and top edges of the ZN5, as well as the rear cover, are made of metal, while the bottom of the device is coated in a rubber material.
The ZN5's display offers QVGA (240x320 pixel) resolution and has a fairly high maximum brightness. The colors are quite good and the images are very sharp. A larger display would have been nice for a phone with such a focus on photography, but would have required that the phone be larger.
The keypad is a flat plastic sheet with raised bumps that act as finger guides. The bumps on the keypad are a good idea and help to keep fingers where they need to be when dialing or entering text. The feel of the keypad is decent, but not as nice as that from the metal keypads found on many of Motorola's devices. The d-pad controller that sits above the keypad works pretty well even if it is a bit small, but the buttons that surround it are poorly designed and somewhat hard to use.
On the right edge of the ZN5 are the volume controls, the lock button, and the camera shutter button. The camera shutter button is purple in color and oddly shaped, but seems to work well enough. The left edge of the phone is home to the uncovered 3.5mm headphone port and the covered micro-USB power/USB socket. The cover on the micro-USB port tends to get in the way during charging and, if one is not careful, the cable or power connector won't engage the phone fully.
The keypad is the first of a few build quality issues that ZN5 owners will have to deal with. It is too flimsy and is not attached properly at its edges. The gap between the keypad and the rest of the device is also inconsistent, which looks somewhat cheap. Motorola has said that they became aware of that problem after we received our ZN5, but before T-Mobile customers did, and that the issue has been addressed. We are waiting for a new unit to test. The other problem that would be considered a build quality issue is the aforementioned rear cover. It has to be coaxed into the proper position when put in place, else it will not click in properly. A little side to side action when snapping it into place will often do the trick, but a trick should not be necessary at all. In spite of its pieces not always fitting together with tight tolerances, the phone overall feels very strong - which is a good thing for a device that will see as much photo action as the ZN5.

Should I get this phone? I love this phone, but i wish the structure was more like the ROKR E8. I want the screen to be bigger, too. The camera is really nice though.

I HATE THIS PHONE!!!!! THis is one of the worst phone I've ever had!!! Yes the camera is great but the phone itself constantly freezes! I would not recommend it for anyone!

Pros
Good camera
Lots of memory
Nice bigger screen
Flash camera
Cover to protect camera screen
One nice thing is with the phone book how you used to have to make a sim copy and a phone copy to make your ringer ID’s work you don’t have to with this phone
Cons
The disc that is attached to freezes up laptops
The pictures from previous memory card also some pics will not be put on the screen normal it will be put on a up to down view instead of a left to write
Unlike other Motorola phones where you plug the phone into the computer and can drag files into the disk you can’t with this one you have to use the memory card adapter and create your own files to then drag the files into the memory card.
It wants you to alter your phone book quite a bit
LADIES WITH NAILS this phone is DIFFICULT for typing you really have to try it
TEXTIN- the send button and the delete (back button) ARE VERY CLOSE together. Again girls with nails this gets rather irritating
I haven’t noticed any problems with sending and receiving pics but with how much trouble I had with this phone I honestly don’t know if I will be keeping it.

if you are even thinking about getting one of these phones - run the other way in a hurry. i have had one for 6 months and it has been returned to motorola twice. their web site is a sick joke. be prepared to spend hours on the phone with customer service. phone stops in the middle of videos and calls. also has the worse file software i have ever seen. demanded $8 for codets and still refused to work with any video file. when returned for service, i was sent a damaged rear cover. when i returned for damaged rear cover (and other things) they returned the damaged rear cover that they sent last time despite notes taped to the rear cover. another 45 minutes on the phone to the service people. will have to see if they manage to send the correct cover (was offered a black and purple one). since gray ids the only color zn5 comes in, it should be interesting!

ive had this phone for a little while now. DO NOT GET THIS PHONE. i have had to switch it out TWICE and it still gives me the same problem.
The picture qualitiy is great. but that is as far as it goes. and the battery life is great.
everytime i put the phone down, it turns off and restarts, first phone did it as well as second one. and if you are a texter, DO NOT GET IT. its a headache to text!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been using the phone, and haven't had a PC freeze up yet. Sometimes I wonder what people are doing with their tech in order for it to end up so jacked up so quickly. The texting is no biggie except the buttons aren't raised and you have the braille dots for indication.
The pic resolution is super, the pic editing is cool.
The 2 hours of video recording is awesome, you have your calender, optional use of the task list, you can swap between the cell, and home, or business phone of your contacts without going to the number to select it specifically with just changing the icon you wish to contact them by.
The screen is a good size, the screen is vibrant, you have the option of using apps, you can minimize apps and keep them running.
Overall, basically unless you are looking for a 3G touch screen phone, there is nothing really to complain about on this phone. Its a freaking phone, not a robot. So take care of the phone, utilize everything that it has, and you benefit, but if you trash the phone (being extremely rough with it, or lack the intellect to make sense of it then it will appear to be a bad phone.
