[This review is a tad less complete than some of our reviews. A bit of unfortunate timing and some transatlantic travel forced it to be written at 37,000 feet over the Atlantic ocean. Half of the photos were shot on a plane as well, with the other half being shot in a hotel. -editor]
Samsung's SCH-u940 Glyde is the latest touchscreen device to be offered by the Korean handset giant. It goes on sale today at Verizon Wireless locations. The Glyde has a lot of the same cool technology that the LG enV2 and Voyager offer, but is far more compact in size. With specs like a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, EV-DO 3G data, an auto-focus camera, and a full touchscreen UI, the Glyde could be very appealing to those Verizon customers with a bit of iPhone envy.
You will find complete specs of the Glyde on the last page of the review.
Physical Aspects
The Samsung Glyde is a very good looking, if simply designed, messaging phone. The phone feels solidly built, and the slider that reveals the QWERTY keyboard has a very smooth and mildly sprung action to it. There are few hardware buttons on the Glyde, and only one on the face of the phone: the home key. On the right edge users will find the power/lock key, the volume control, and the camera shutter button. All of the buttons work well enough.
The back of the Glyde is plain except for the camera and its LED flash and self-portrait mirror. The rear cover can be removed to provide access to the microSD card slot and the battery (which doesn't need to be removed when swapping memory cards). The only other item of interest on the phone is the covered power/headset/USB port on the bottom left edge of the phone.
In order to fit into a device as compact as the Glyde, the keyboard design had to be compromised a bit. There are only 3 rows of keys on the keyboard, which means that the space bar has to be mixed in with the bottom row of keys. As such, the keys don't line up the same way they do on a full size keyboard. For example, the M key sits under the L key instead of the J key where it would typically reside. This will make blind typing a bit harder - at least initially. In spite of the poor positioning, the keys themselves have nice tactile feedback.
The WVGA (240x440 pixel) display on the Glyde is relatively large, at 2.75" across the diagonal, and more than bright and crisp enough. Like most finger touch screens on the market, with the one on the iPhone being an exception, the Glyde's display has a bit of give to it that is required for the touch sensing technology. A combination of that with perhaps some software issues make it a bit inaccurate to use at times, but more on that later. The other problem is its widescreen format, which we found to be less than optimal for most all tasks.
In the case of the Glyde, this oddball aspect ratio takes its toll on a number of applications in the phone, most notably the browser. The very short height of the display when in landscape mode gives users very little finger room for scrolling up and down in web pages. The display does allow the phone to stay narrow, but a wider display and an extra row of keys on the keyboard would have made the Glyde much more usable.
So while superficially the Glyde has a nice physical design, the compromises made appear to be a bit too severe for a device meant to excel at messaging and use a finger based touch interface.

Love this phone. I may not be having some of the problems that other people had when the phone first came out, because mine is new. The touch screen does take a little getting used to, but that is on every touch screen. I'm a Samsung person though. I've had 6 cell phones, and 4 have been Samsung. I will give the Voyager and the Dare props. they are good phones, but this one is too. I learned a lot about the phone and features by reading the manual. It does take some time, but it will teach you more than you think. This is my first touch screen, but my son does have an ipod touch. I miss hit the touch screen commands on it too. I do like the fact that a stylus will NOT work on this phone, it makes it easier to have in your pocket. Anyway, I've rambled enough. I love the phone, coolest one I've ever owned. I will upgrade one day, but it will always be a Samsung.

I thought the "quirks" with this phone, like the touchscreen problems, having to remove the battery cover to get to the memory card and other design issues, would be ones that I would get used to, but they just drove me more crazy the longer I had it--especially because the touchscreen problems got worse and worse. It's a shame, because it has some cool features, but it is just to frustrating to use. I finally decided to take it back at the end of my 30-day window.

This is the worst phone that i have ever had. I think they should take it out of stores and maybe get a clue that it sucks. It always breaks and the touch screnn suck. Congratulations Samsung, you have made the worlds worst phone.

I've had this phone for a few months now. I like it as far as the look / features go, but because of the touch screen i had to get it replaced within the first 30 days. I've gotten it replaced 4 times, and am on my 4th Glyde. After this one breaks, which im assuming is inevitable with time, im probably going to get a different phone.

This is without a doubt, one of the WORST phones I have ever owned. The touch screen is so flawed it's ridiculous. Half the time I'll touch the "menu" "button" and it will go to the bottom bar. There are days where I will have to shut it off 5 times in 5 minutes. The "update" they gave me for the software is complete rubbish. It does the same thing, including turning my phone off as well. Kiosks have pulled this phone off of their shelves due to people returning it so much. Do NOT get this phone!

this phone was very awesome when i first got it, but after having it for a while, the screen will act up, the phone will shut off randomly and i would manually have to turn it back on, pictures are delayed alot, and if i get a text message while sending one, the one sending wont send because of the other text that just came through. the only good thing about this phone is the full keyboard. i had to repeatedly slam my phone against a desk for it to finally respond to me. i normally have phone problems with at&t, then i switched to verizon, and the first phone i get is the glyde. HUGE MISTAKE! i wouldnt recommend this phone to anybody!!! i plan on going back to at&t soon because of this phone.

I was excited about this phone…for a minute. I bought my Glyde four months ago (May 09) and it worked fine long enough for the thirty day return warranty to expire. Since that time, I’ve had nothing but problems. 1) key a message; click send and slide it closed…the phone turns off…completely off and must be turned back on. 2) touch screen often freezes; the phone has to be turned off and then on. 3) having an micro sd card is useless. I can add music, sounds, and pics and they won’t show up on the card after it’s inserted back into the phone. 4) battery life is minimal. 5) contacts disappear. 6) cannot transfer files from phone to pc or pc to phone. In short, if you’re looking for a good phone that is reliable even for basic use…this is not the phone. I wouldn’t recommend it. AND, the best yet…when taken to Verizon, I was told they could replace it with another three times in a 90 day period (one a month--$20.00 each replacement for transferring contacts and shipping…that’s $60.00 total) before honoring a totally different phone.

I've had this phone for a little over a year now, and I love it! It's possibly the best phone out there right now. It won't give you near as many problems as I have heard that the Voyager has. I am very hard on all my phones. I accidently drop the phone all the time and never once has the screen cracked or anything. The touchscreen does at times like to be difficult but you are going to have that with any touchscreen you get. Some of the icons are small so if you have large fingers I would not recommend this phone. All in all this phone is great! It comes with mobil IM which saves you the cost of having it downloaded and the full keyboard is great for messaging!

!! I loved this phone at the shop, I took it out of the box right when i got it and it started being lame. I ignored it for a while but since i drop my phones a lot i put cases on them and the CASES MAKE THE SCREEN WORSE!! It takes me like 5 minutes just to get up my txt mail inbox thing! Tho i do like the key board! But sorry I would not buy this cell phone EVER!! I always tell people that when there going threw it

phonefiend @ 4:51:21PM EST on Sunday November 1, 2009
nothing but constant touchscreen issues, accuracy of screen is as bad as it gets, makes a great paperweight, but much more expensive then a rock!
sarah @ 1:21:38AM EST on Sunday November 22, 2009
I've been through 3 of these phones -- the problem that seems to always occur is the fact that the lower right side of the touch screen ALWAYS goes out, no matter what. I have a protective case and a pouch I put it in, but always seems to fade out on me. So when this does happen, it means I can no longer take pictures or record video. But hey, that's okay. Because Verizon came out with a "newer" version of the Glyde.

this is a sad excuse for a phone. I'm getting my 5th one of it. This was probably the biggest mistake ever. only once it was my fault it broke. 1st phone- touch screen completely messed up. 2nd one- Wouldn't charge. 3rd one- i broke myself... 4th- the speaker blew out so you can't tlak when its closed only when its open, and 2 times the whoel screen went white its still stuck that's why im getting a new one tomorrow. the all shared the common traits of reatarting by themselves and also freezing while browsing on the web. Verizon isn't much help, they just keep replacing it, dont they understand that it will just break again?!?! I wouldnt never recommend this phone to someone.
