Recently BlueAnt Wireless entered the US market looking to expand globally with its line of Bluetooth devices and accessories. Native to Australia and one of their leading suppliers of Bluetooth peripherals, BlueAnt offers hands free and wireless products that range from Bluetooth car kits and headsets to Bluetooth A2DP stereo headphones.
Here at MobileBurn we had a chance to test drive BlueAnt's SuperTooth II, an multi-purpose Bluetooth speakerphone that requires no installation and basically works right out of the box. This versatile speakerphone can be used on any office desk but benefits users most as a hands free speakerphone for driving. Thanks to two magnetic visor mounts included with the portable SuperTooth II, moving the device from vehicle to vehicle is effortless.
Physical Aspects
The SuperTooth II comes with a user manual, an AC power adapter, a wired privacy headset, 2 dual sided magnetic sun visor clips, and a car charger. The headset ear piece is used for holding private conversations, if needed, while using the speakerphone. The device supports Bluetooth v1.1 and should work with any Bluetooth enable phone that supports the headset and hands free Bluetooth profiles.
The BlueAnt SuperTooth II is a durable and sturdy speakerphone, with an aluminum and black scratch-resistant matte finish. Measuring 137mm x 60mm x 20mm (5.4" x 2.4" x .8"), the SuperTooth II's size is similar to that of a palm sized PDA. While weight and dimensions are not all that important for a speakerphone designed for a car's sun visor, detail oriented people will be happy to know that the device weighs in at 134g (4.7oz) without the visor clip. The visor clip will add an additional 25g (0.9oz) of weight when attached to the unit.
The device utilizes its built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery to provide users with up to 20 hours of talk time or about 33 days of operating standby time, according to the manufacturer's claim. A note to users: there is no automatic power off feature on the SuperTooth II. The fact that the speakerphone has over 33 days of standby time, as well as a handy car charger, should help mitigate this problem, though.
There are 3 main buttons on the front of the unit - a pickup/hang-up button (located on the swivel arm), a reject button, and a volume control knob; the first of which is used to make and receive calls, redial last number, and pair to a handset. The reject button, when pressed, will reject an incoming call but will only work on phones that use the hands free profile. For headset mode profiles, the user must reject calls with their phone. The last button is the volume control knob, easily located on the front of the device. This button can be easily located, which is very convenient when driving. The volume knob is used to change the ring level of the speakerphone as well as the call audio volume.
The SuperTooth II is controlled largely by the device's swivel arm. The arm houses the unit's noise cancelling microphone and acts as the on/off switch. Designed to accommodate any position of the car's sun visor but still allow for voice clarity and good sound, the swivel arm can be adjusted at 0, 55, 90, and 210 degrees. For the device to turn on, the swivel arm must be placed to the 55, 90, or 210 degree positions. When the arm is flipped down to the 0° position flush to the unit, the SuperTooth II is powered off. If you do this while on a call, the device will automatically transfer the audio back to the mobile phone. All positions are easily accessed by rotating the arm while the unit is securely mounted to the magnetic clips on the visor. We noticed no movement or rocking of the device when changing the arm's positions.
