Based on the GSM MOTOKRZR K1, the two MOTOKRZR K1m variants aim to bring the new KRZR styling to the world's major CDMA markets. While the 3 handsets share much, their specs and features are different in many respects. For example, the K1m for the Americas gets a 1.3 megapixel camera instead of the 2 megapixel shooter found in the Asian K1m and the GSM K1. Both K1m versions get nifty touch sensitive music control buttons on the outside of the flip that are not found at all on the GSM version. Similar to the buttons found on LG's Chocolate series of phones, these music buttons do not actually move, but work by detecting the presence of a finger on the glass surface of the phone. They work pretty well, and can't be acidentally pressed when in a pocket or purse.
The MOTOKRZR K1m version for China and Korea gets a few exclusive upgrades not found on the other devices, such as a high-res 320x240 pixel display. In order to attempt to make up for the increased battery drain from the larger and higher resolution display, the K1m for Asia also gets a larger battery. As such, the phone weighs a few grams more than the K1 and the Americas K1m. In spite of the larger battery, the K1m for Asia still has a shorter battery life than the Americas version - even though it lacks the EV-DO 3G support found on the K1m for the Americas.
Other differences exist between the GSM and various CDMA versions of the MOTOKRZR. For one, the CDMA handsets lack support for the Bluetooth A2DP stereo profile. Also, the CDMA devices are a millimeter wider than the GSM MOTOKRZR, due to larger size of the display in the Asian model, we were told.
The initial release of the K1m will be sold in a pearl gray color (Americas) and black (Asia). Motorola expects the K1m devices to be available some time in this half of 2006. More photos, including screen shots of the Asian K1m's unique user interface, as well as a video, can be found on the following pages.
