Sony Ericsson Launches Sporty W710 Walkman Phone

Snapshot by Michael Oryl on Thursday May 18, 2006.

Today in London, Sony Ericsson released the sporty new W710 Walkman phone. The new quad-band GSM/EDGE handset is meant for people that value a more active lifestyle. As such, it comes equipped with features like a built-in pedometer for measure how far you walk or run, as well as a sports arm band and belt clip so you can easily take the W710i with you while out for a morning jog.

The W710 naturally comes with the Walkman music application, and supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, and even the M4A music format. The included Disc2Phone software will let you get all of your music loaded on the W710's included 512MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card. Capacities of up to 1GB are currently supported by the M2 card slot, if you need more room for your files. Should the need for something different arise, W710 owners will have the option of using the RDS capable FM receiver that is also built-in. An optional FM transmitter accessory will allow the W710 to broadcast its music to a nearby FM radio, as well. One new feature is support for song recognition. A W710 user can record a clip of a song they hear on a nearby radio, for example, and the W710 will send that clip to the Gracenote Mobile MusicID service for a quick lookup and the resulting artist and song information being zipped back to the user.

Other features of note include the 262k color main display (176x220 pixels) and the large external sub-display that shows 4 different shades of Walkman orange. Interestingly enough, the external display will give you constant updates on the number of steps you have taken so far that day, thanks to the pedometer that resets nightly at midnight. You'll also find a fixed-focus 2 megapixel digital camera, PTT support, and Bluetooth. The Sony Ericsson HPM-65 stereo portable handsfree headset is included in the box, and uses a stable ear-hook form that will not be shaken off easily when you and your W710 are moving about.

Sony Ericsson expects Q3 availability for the W710i in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, while the W710c will be sold in mainland China. The company says that the device will be sold in two colors: Performance Graphite and Hatha Violet.
