So let's say that twelve months ago you bought a hot new mobile phone that was the envy of all your friends. It was stylish, expensive, and exclusive. But here in the present day it seems that everybody and their grandmother has the same phone as you do. One that they bought for half the price. What's a trendsetter to do?
Well, the people at CellFan.com would have you purchase one of their vinyl phone skins. For US$12.95, CellFan.com will send you a self-adhesive vinyl skin that is custom cut to fit your particular cell phone. Currently the company makes skins for phones from 21 different manufacturers, including all of the big names in the industry. The skins use images from dozens of sources, including Star Wars, flags of the world, music, and even SI Swimsuit models. We chose the most sinister Darth Vader theme for our black Motorola RAZR V3.
The skin itself arrives on a stiff sheet of waxed paper. All of the cuts have been made already for things like external displays, speaker openings, and battery compartments. Once you have thoroughly cleaned your phone, all you do is peel off a section of the skin, taking care not to tear or stretch it, and carefully place it on your phone. It doesn't take much in terms of dust or grit to show up under the skin, so be careful.
The vinyl skin itself is self-adhesive. As long as you are careful about it, you can remove and reapply the skin numerous times. No adhesive residue is left behind on the surface of your handset. While getting the skin pieces lined up appropriately can be a bit tedious, you can always pull it off (carefully) and try it again.
While I am not able to give the CellFan skins a real world test by carrying around my newly clad RAZR in my pocket for a few weeks, I can tell you that the skins seem pretty tough. The corners of the various pieces seem quite secure, and it actually requires some diligence with a fingernail in order to get them pulled up far enough for removal. As such, I think that the skins should deal with everyday use fairly well.
CellFan.com also makes skins for popular laptops, MP3 players, portable game devices, and other devices. Even Tivo digital video recorders.
So if you are tired of looking just like everybody else and have a few extra dollars burning a hole in your pocket, a cell phone skin from CellFan.com might be just the thing to dress up your mobile phone of choice.
To start the search for your own skin, just hop on over to the CellFan.com website.
