T-Mobile and Samsung Introduce the Samsung SGH-x495

Snapshot by Brad Kellett on Tuesday August 02, 2005.

Yesterday T-Mobile USA announced that it will be carrying the Samsung SGH-x495 mobile handset starting this month.

The Samsung SGH-x495 is the successor to the SGH-x475, also carried by T-Mobile. The basic clamshell form factor handset builds on its predecessor by including a better screen, upgrading from an STN to an TFT LCD, and better battery life. The display is one of Samsung's UFB, or Ultra Fine and Bright, models providing a clear and bright display with less battery drain. The Samsung SGH-x495 is also slightly larger than the SGH-x475 in all dimensions.

The Samsung SGH-x495 supports T-Mobile's HiFi Ringtones and Java MIDP 2.0 for games and applications. The SGH-x495 allows over-the-air downloading of games, ringtones, and wallpaper, but due to the omission of Bluetooth, or even InfraRed connectivity, the user is restricted to only using an over-the-air service. Instant messaging support is provided for AIM, Yahoo!, and ICQ. Also included is basic personal organizer features such as a calendar, calculator, to do list, voice memo, world clock, and a monochrome OLED display on the outside of the flip.

For a basic handset, the phone is fairly well featured, and should suit its intended market well. The Samsung SGH-x495 is available in white, for post-paid customers, and blue, for pre-paid, and is priced at $129.99USD or $49.99USD with an instant rebate from T-Mobile.
