Back at the 3GSM show in Cannes France last month, Sony Ericsson announced their plans to launch a line of mobile phones making use of the Sony Walkman brand. Today they launched the first such device, the W800. But not willing to make the W800 just a good music player, the company also packs in some other functionality that is sure to get tongues wagging, such as the built-in 2 megapixel camera with an auto-focus lens.

Sony ericsson claims that the W800's battery will be good for up to 30 hours of music playing when the phone is off, which is nearly double that of the new Apple iPod Mini. With the phone on, it should be good for 15 hours. The W800 ships with a 512MB Memory Stick Duo flash card for storage. It appears that the W800 does not support the higher capacity Duo Pro cards, however.

Sony Ericsson has given the W800 what they call a Direct Music button, which will allow quick one-button access to the music functionality, just as one would expect from a dedicated MP3 player. The W800 is compatible with the optional MMC-60 Music Cable that allows the handset to be cabled directly to an existing stereo system.

The W800 weighs less than 100g and supports the 900, 1800, and 1900Mhz GSM bands. No word yet on pricing or availability.
