Nuance to Further Innovate Speech, Predictive Text, and Search and Discovery Applications Tailored for Symbian and Series 60 Market

BURLINGTON, MA, July 20, 2009 – Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced that it has been accepted as a member of the Symbian Foundation, enabling Nuance to further develop and deploy innovative mobile solutions that enhance and simplify devices based on the Symbian operating system (OS). Symbian provides the world's leading open mobile OS, shipping in over 250 million mobile devices to date.

With Nuance joining the Symbian Foundation, other Foundation members can increasingly leverage Nuance's mobile voice and text input solutions to facilitate the creation of powerful and intuitive multi-modal interfaces that enhance user experiences, allow for third party development and enhancement, and enable users to maximize the full potential of their devices. This spirit of collaboration for the broader mobile ecosystem fostered by the Symbian Foundation complements Nuance's extensive portfolio of mobile solutions powered by speech and predictive input technology that simplifies the user experience across all mobile devices.

The Symbian Foundation, together with its ecosystem, is creating the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform. The platform is based on Symbian OS and software assets contributed by Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, and Sony Ericsson, including the S60 and MOAP(S) user interfaces.

"The Symbian OS brought smartphones to the mainstream and powers among the most advanced devices on the global market," said Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. "We expect that the adoption of Series 60 phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG and others is going to rapidly expand over the next few years. This proliferation of Symbian's open source platform provides Nuance with an exciting opportunity to bring our innovative speech, predictive text and handwriting solutions to an increasingly pervasive mobile platform base around the world."

Nuance's broad portfolio of speech and predictive text solutions are already available for many Symbian Series 60 devices around the world, including XT9 , T9 Nav , and TALKS&ZOOMS . Nuance's mobile solutions have shipped on more than 4 billion devices worldwide, a result of its extensive relationships with carriers around the world and with every major mobile handset manufacturer.
