Press Release posted by Michelle Ruhfass on Tuesday May 05, 2009.

iPhone application displays countdown to Host City decision in October along with Olympic and Paralympic trivia

CHICAGO (May 5, 2009)—Chicago 2016 announced today that a new iPhone application is now available to iPhone users displaying a countdown to the Host City decision by the International Olympic Committee. Today marks 150 days until the decision is made on October 2 in Copenhagen, Denmark, following Chicago 2016's final presentation. Each day, the free application provides a fun fact about Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Olympic Movement or Olympic sports trivia.

"By bidding for the honor to host the 2016 Games, Chicago 2016 is dedicated to promoting the Olympic values, educating youth on the Olympic Movement and increasing accessibility to Olympic and Paralympic Sport," said Patrick G. Ryan, chairman and CEO of Chicago 2016. "The iPhone application provides a fun and interactive way for people to connect with the bid while learning about the Olympic Movement and the impact it could have on our nation if we are selected as Host City."

In addition to being the first bid city to utilize YouTube and Twitter to engage youth and others and further the message of the Olympic Movement, Chicago 2016 is also the first to launch an iPhone application. Chicago 2016 also has more than 40,000 supporters engaged with the bid through Facebook.

The launch of the iPhone application coincides with the start of Olympic Week in America, a week-long event for school children celebrating the Olympic Movement and the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Olympic Week in America was started in 2007 by the United States Olympic Committee.

That's good marketing. I live in Chicago and am excited about the Olympics coming here, but the people against the Olympics coming to Chicago have a point too.
