FCC to revamp Universal Service Fund

News by Todd Haselton on Friday March 05, 2010.

The Federal Communications Commission today said that it plans to revamp the Universal Service Fund and put more focus on delivering high-speed broadband to poor and rural parts of the United States.

Surchages on long distance phone calls help fund the $8 billion per year program. The program currently subsidizes the cost of telephone service in those aforementioned areas. [Associated Press via Phone Scoop]
