Samsung launches i5700 Galaxy Spica Android smartphone for Europe

Product Launch by Michael Oryl on Sunday November 15, 2009.

Today Samsung officially unwrapped its i5700 Galaxy Spica, the Android-powered smartphone that has been known in the rumor mills as the Galaxy Lite. The new i5700 features a quick 800MHz processor that helps it to be the first Android smartphone with support for DivX videos.

The Galaxy Spica is a quad-band GSM/EDGE phone that also supports 3.2Mbps HSDPA data speeds on the 900 and 2100MHz UMTS bands. It features a 3.2-inch Half-VGA (320 x 480 pixel) TFT capacitive touchscreen display and also sports a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus. The Galaxy Spica comes pre-loaded with the full suite of Google services, including Google Maps, Gmail, and YouTube, and runs on the Android 1.5 "Cupcake" operating system.

Like all Android phones, the i5700 has a full HTML capable web browser, and it also includes GPS functionality, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi data, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for stereo music listening. The phone measures 115mm x 57mm x 13.2mm (4.5in x 2.2in x .5in) in size and is equipped with a 1500mAh battery for long life.

The Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica should be available now across Europe and the CIS nations. No pricing information has been provided at this time.
