Palm has released the 1.3.1 update for its webOS smartphone system today, a day earlier than we had been expecting it since tomorrow is the official availability date of the new Palm Pixi, Palm's second webOS smartphone. The update is available now to Palm Pre owners through an over the air update.

Most of the changes made to the OS appear to be fairly small bug fixes, but there are some gems in there, as well. One such update is the ability to get calendar and contact synchronization with Yahoo!'s web system. Support for Yahoo! instant messaging has also been added, and the webOS now supports Google Apps and Yahoo! Small Business Domain email addresses.

The update does not appear to fix the incompatibility problem with Apple's iTunes sync.

You can read the full list of changes over at the Palm website.
