AT&T, Verizon, others agree to LTE voice and SMS standards, ensuring international roaming

News by Brian James Kirk on Wednesday November 04, 2009.

Several major telecommunication companies including Nokia, Samsung, AT&T, Verizon, Sony Ericsson, Vodafone and others have agreed upon standards for delivering voice and SMS over Long Term Evolution(INFO) 4G wireless networks globally.

The solution, which will guarantee international roaming an interoperability between LTE services, is called One Voice and is based upon existing 3GPP-specifications for optimal compatibility. Orange, Telefonica, and TeliaSonera have also agreed to the new standards, as well as Nokia Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent.

The One Voice profile for voice and SMS over LTE has been finalized, and it is expected that it will be turned over to existing industry forums for future development.
