Google Voice surpassed 1 million users before light version launched
News by Brian James Kirk on Monday November 02, 2009.
Google Voice has 1.4 million users, 570,000 of which use the service every day of the week, according to a letter submitted to the Federal Communications Commission about the service, BusinessWeek reports.
The figures represent the service's user base before it launched a light version that lets users keep their phone number and use Google Voice for voicemail functionality, announced just last week. It is likely that the functionality will attract more users.
The letter was submitted to the FCC last Thursday when Google promised the regulator that it would limit the number of phone numbers it blocks to save money on fees associated with rural telephone carriers, as we reported.
The FCC began probing the service early last month on the recommendation of federal lawmakers and national telephone carriers who are not allowed to block calls.
