News by Brian James Kirk on Monday October 26, 2009.

RIM and Verizon have released the BlackBerry OS 5.0 update for the original Storm 9530 touchscreen smartphone, an update announced along with the new Storm2 9550 smartphone, reported earlier today.

The OS update includes typing and selection improvement and general usability enhancements. The new OS also features aesthetic updates like inertial scrolling, gradient shading and more animation.

The new BlackBerry Browser includes faster code rendering, with improvements to the JavaScript and CSS engines. With Gears support, users can use offline applications and BlackBerry widget support gives users more content options.

Storm 9530 users can update their device online at blackberry.com/update, through BlackBerry Desktop Manager or from the Verizon Wireless download site.

Downloaded the new 5.0 update this morning. HUGE improvements. I'm still getting the Storm 2... But this software upgrade has really sped up my storm. Almost 1/3.. to maybe 50% more responsive!!! Thanks!

The new update for the storm (5.0) is great! The phone works much faster and more efficiently. I just bought the phone and had the old software and when I updated the software the other day; there was a drastic difference. I highly recommend you all to update the software to your Storm!
