T-Mobile to offer corporate WiFi service like consumer-focused Hotspot @Home

News by Brian James Kirk on Monday October 05, 2009.

Reuters reports that T-Mobile will begin offering a call service to corporations that would allow business customers to save cellular minutes by connecting calls through office WiFi networks.

The offering is similar to the carrier's consumer-focused Hotspot @Home, which is based upon the UMA(INFO) VoIP standard. Hotspot @Home lets users roam between WiFi networks and cellular networks and optionally, with a monthly fee, get unlimited calling when on WiFi networks. The corporate service will utilize BlackBerry phones with WiFi chipsets and would end the need for business users to have a wired desktop telephone.

Analysts say that, unlike landline and wireless companies like AT&T, T-Mobile's wireless-only act wouldn't cause it to worry about canibalizing its fixed-line revenue with the new service like AT&T might.

The new service will cost a flat monthly fee based on number of lines on top of the normal cellular rates, but pricing details have not yet been announced.

Offering WLAN as a service is becoming increasingly common these days. However, the WLAN Quality required for VoIP is substantially higher that the "Best Effort SLA" (a contradiction in terms!) we are used to see today. A real WLAN Service Level Agreement must be backed by a Wireless Quality Assurance (WQA) solution that continuously monitors the fulfillment of the SLA performance criteria 7x27 and transparently alerts the WLAN maintenance staff AND the customer of the outsourced WLAN service when a problem appears and also keeps tab when the issue was resolved. Continuous centralized monitoring also allows to capture intermittent radio problems (like a leaking microvawe oven or a security motion sensor in WLAN frequency), making all relevant data readily available for the WLAN Experts, making the SLA based WLAN Maintenance cost-effective.

As T-Mobile has understood, corporate WiFi service represents a good business opportunity, but that can only materialize if they employ a similar WQA as cellphone operators are routinely using. One of the most advanced WQA solutions today is 7signal Sapphire, although some vendors of WLAN Security Products claim to be offering similar add-on capability to their security products functionality.
