Google Latitude now available for Apple iPhone as a web app

Yesterday Google announced the release of a version of its Latitude service for the Apple iPhone. The new web-based application for the iPhone allows users to see where friends and family are located on a scrollable and zoomable map.

It appears that Apple requested that Latitude be implemented as a web application in order to avoid confusion with the stock Maps application that is pre-loaded on every iPhone. While the new Safari 3.0 browser provides web apps with location information, there is no way for Latitude to run in the background the way it does on other smartphones. As such, location information in Latitude is only updated when the web app is accessed directly by the user.

Google Latitude is already supported by the Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile smartphone platforms.

Loopt does this already. Too little too late Google. I was hoping for real time updates like it does with smart phones and black berry. Thanks apple for making Google Latitude absolutely worthless.
