New Low-Power WiFi Chipset from Alps

Newsbrief by Siddharth Raja on Thursday May 27, 2004.

The Alps Electronics company has started production of a 802.11b chipset that is much smaller and less power hungry than previous chips. This new chip measures just 11mm x 13.7mm x 1.8mm and is designed specially for portable devices. Previous Wi-Fi chipsets have used up to 50 milliwatts, while this new chip uses just 1 milliwatt. Although these chips will likely find their way into PDA's and digital cameras, the company mentions that they are going to be releasing it first on a mobile phone. And before you start getting ideas, we expect the first phones with this chipset will be Japan only.

You can read more about and see a picture of the actual chip at It Media (Japan). The site is in Japanese.
