Skyfire web browser beta released for BlackBerry smartphones
Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Monday July 13, 2009.
The popular Skyfire mobile web browser has entered beta status for BlackBerry devices.
Updated from a previous alpha version, this new beta offers several enhancements. Keyboard shortcuts have been included, users can default to the Skyfire browser, contextual zooming has been added and zooming speeds improved. As with any beta software, there are reported and documented bugs, as well.
Skyfire has brought support for Flash 10, Silverlight, JavaScript, AJAX, and Quicktime to Windows Mobile and Symbian devices, making sites like Hulu accessible for the first time on some smartphones. The BlackBerry port of the browser has been planned for some time, as we reported on it in May.
