Report: Nokia losing teenager interest

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Thursday June 04, 2009.

Reuters is reporting that 21 percent of teens said Nokia was their favorite handset brand, down from 29 percent last year, according a survey of 112,000 teenagers in 30 countries.

Analysts told the publication that Nokia's popularity is dwindling because it has failed to introduce phones with features that are interesting to teens, like touchscreen devices. Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic has sold 2.6 million units, but its price point puts it out of the mass market.

The survey does exclude some emerging markets where Nokia is a leader.

I think the U.S. marketed Nokia phones are making teens lose interest in Nokia products. In the U.S. Nokia almost always sells it's lower end models through carriers never the high end ones like the 5800 Xpress music or any of the N series phones. This is what causes teens to lose interest because almost every teen in the U.S. gets a new phone from their carrier every two or less years. Because Nokia doesn't sell through carriers for discounted prices teens don't buy COOL high end Nokia phones; they only buy the low end basics or they don't buy from Nokia. It's really a shame because Nokia has so much to offer, so many phones that suit all different people and whatever their needs.
