Palm unveils Pre iTunes support and Twitter search integration
News by Michael Oryl on Thursday May 28, 2009.
Earlier today Palm's executive chairman, Jon Rubenstein, released a few more details about the upcoming webOS powered Pre smartphone at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital event.
Rubenstein unveiled the Palm Media Sync feature of webOS, which is compatible with Apple's iTunes music synchronization software. Pre users can make use of a simple USB cable to synchronize music from iTunes to the Pre, though Palm Media Sync only supports DRM-free music. Palm also points out that the Pre supports USB mass storage device emulation, which provides a simple way to sideload media files without any 3rd party software. Palm also mentioned that the Pre supports the Amazon MP3 store, giving users a way to purchase songs from the phone itself.
Palm's Rubenstein also announced that Twitter search has been integrated into the webOS' "Universal Search" function, which searches both the phone and the internet in real time as the user enters in search terms on the Pre. Palm also showed off a beta version of the Palm App Catalog, the company's application store. The App Catalog beta will be available to Pre users on launch day.
