Software developer Canonical wants Android apps to run on Ubuntu

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Wednesday May 27, 2009.

ArsTechnica is reporting that software development company Canonical is creating an Android execution environment that will allow Android applications to run on its open-source Linux-based Ubuntu operating system.

Because Android runs on Google's custom Java runtime, porting conventional Linux apps to Android is not particularly simple. Canonical's environment would allow Android applications to run beside native Linux applications on Ubuntu and possibly on other Linux distributions.
