Planning to pick up one of Palm's new Pre smartphones from Sprint next month? Better get a plan together since it seems that they are going to be in short supply. A couple of weeks back we received a tip from a source that works for one of Sprint's retail partners and were told that there was a very limited supply of Pre units that were slated to be available at launch time. Now it seems that Sprint's CEO, Dan Hesse, has confirmed that the number of Pre phones available will be limited.
Reuters quoted Hesse as saying the following at an investor conference:
"We don't intend to advertise it heavily early on because we think we are going to have shortages for a while. We won't be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time."
Our source had indicated that there would be less than 30,000 units available at launch time, but it is unclear whether that figure represents only a particular retail chain's allotment, or if that accounts for the sum total of all Pre units that are going to be offered through all channels. We find it hard to believe that Palm would have only 30,000 total units available for the launch, but one never knows.
