Verizon may cut back its number of mobile operating systems

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Thursday April 02, 2009.

Reuters is reporting that Verizon may cut back the number of cell phone operating systems it supports to 3-4 from 8-9 in order to improve the time it takes to bring new technologies to customers.

The company also told reporters at the 2009 CTIA Wireless show that it has teamed up with Vodafone and Softbank Corp. to create a single platform for developers to create mobile data applications for cell phones, suggesting that the company is looking to create its own application store.

The company currently utilizes operating systems from Nokia, Microsoft, RIM, Palm, and several manufacturers with lesser known proprietary operating systems.

Verizon just plain sucks. they take good phones and cripple them with their verizon os such as the motorola razor. that's why I left them. Verizon needs to quit muddling with the phones and let the hardware vendor deal with their OS. Verizon will never match apple and the app store.
