Ericsson demonstrating 56Mbps HSPA with MIMO at CTIA 2009

News by Michael Oryl on Tuesday March 31, 2009.

Today network infrastructure manufacturer Ericsson, one of the joint owners of handset maker Sony Ericsson, announced that it will break its own HSPA(INFO) downlink speed record by demonstrating a new HSPA multi-carrier multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) device at CTIA 2009 that is capable of blazingly fast 56Mbps download speeds.

The device being used in the demonstration is a proof of concept wireless broadband modem.

Ericsson demonstrated a 42Mbps capable HSPA device earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Ericsson said that it will make the 42Mbps technology available in commercial devices by the end of 2009. That version of HSPA with MIMO is currently being ratified by the appropriate standards committees.
