BlackBerry App World prices apps at $2.99 and up, payments powered by PayPal
News by Brian James Kirk on Thursday March 05, 2009.
We have more details on RIM's BlackBerry App World that we reported on yesterday. According to a developer Web site, BlackBerry App World has unveiled pricing tiers, supported devices, and regions where the store is available. It also states that customers will use PayPal to purchase applications from App Store and to compensate developers.
BlackBerry App World includes tiered pricing, allowing developers to provide applications for free or for cost starting at $2.99 and increasing by one dollar increments. Developers must pay $200 to complete registration and submit applications. RIM will review content suitability and perform technical testing to ensure an application meets guidelines before allowing customers to download the application.
The site also describes App World's "MyWorld" feature, which is an online record of downloaded applications, designed to help users keep their applications in case of device failure. Users can re-download paid applications an unlimited number of times to a device an application was purchased on, or to new BlackBerry smartphones three times per year. If a device is incompatible with a previously purchased application, users will have to pay to upgrade an application.
App World supports BlackBerry Bold 9000, Storm, Pearl, Curve 8900, Curve 8300 series, 8800 series, and Pearl series, and is compatible with BlackBerry OS 4.2.0 or better. The service is only available in English, in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. The company says that more languages will be included in future releases.
