Nokia temporarily suspends sales of the 5800 XpressMusic smartphone in North America

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Tuesday March 03, 2009.

A spokesperson with Nokia has confirmed with Mobileburn that it has temporarily suspended sales of the North American variant of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone because of issues with the device connecting to 3G networks. "We are aware that some consumers have reported difficulties connecting with the 3G network when using the North American variant of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device. We are looking into the cause of this now," the spokesperson said.

Earlier, we reported that Nokia confirmed with the Wall Street Journal that the company has pulled its 5800 XpressMusic smartphone off shelves at its flagship Manhattan store.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the device is having problems connecting to local 3G networks in New York and Chicago. The device is working on 3G networks in Dallas and Miami but a spokesperson declined to comment on why it works in some markets and not others. The spokesperson also told the Journal that the problem is exclusive to North America and that customers experiencing problems connecting to 3G networks are advised to contact Nokia customer care.
