Major networks and manufacturers announce plans to implement universal phone charger standards

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Wednesday February 18, 2009.

Nokia, Samsung, AT&T, Motorola, and 13 other operators and manufacturers, along with the GSMA have announced plans to implement cross-industry universal phone charger standards for forthcoming mobile phones.

The initiative hopes to create a common format for chargers, and hopes that the number of energy-efficient chargers will increase. The group has set a target to have a universal charging solution by 2012, and it hopes that most mobile phones will support the universal standard by that time. Micro-USB was chosen as the universal charging interface. [via SlashPhone]
