Panasonic X700 Symbian Clamshell On The Way

News by Siddharth Raja on Tuesday February 10, 2004.

You can find our Panasonic X700 snapshot here.

The managing director of Panasonic's overseas phone division, Bob Morioka, has confirmed that the long rumored Panasonic X700 will be out in stores in July. The X700 will use Nokia's Series 60 UI and have a clamshell form factor, unlike any other Series 60 phone released or soon to be released.

The X700 will be tri-band GSM and be mainly sold in Europe and Asia. It is considered an "upgrade" of the recently released X70 since it will supposedly look alike, but be slightly bigger. It will also feature a 300K (VGA) camera, a massive improvement over the QCIF camera found in the X70. You can also expect to find a 65K TFT screen, as well as Bluetooth in it.

Overall, this looks like an interesting move for Panasonic, who has been relatively conservative with its phones to date. There's obviously demand for a clamshell Series 60 phone (anyone remember the cancelled Samsung D700?), so hopefully the X700 will will be a worthy entrant to the smartphone arena.
