Android off to a slow start at Mobile World Congress 2009

Newsbrief by Michael Oryl on Monday February 16, 2009.

Today at the 2009 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, HTC caught us flat footed by informing us that it would not be introducing any new Android OS based smartphones at this time. There had been rampant speculation that at least one new HTC built Android device would show itself, but that is not happening.

Similarly, Chinese manufacturer Huawei supposedly informed a colleague at PC Magazine that it, too, had no new Android products to show. While we have yet to confirm this with the company ourselves, this is in stark contrast to what the company had indicated in the past.

Considering that Android was widely expected to steal the show at MWC09, the new smartphone platform has certainly gotten off to a slow start.
