RETRACTED: Samsung to use software-switched radio chips in future cell phones

News by Ricky Cadden on Wednesday February 11, 2009.

This story has been retracted.

Samsung has revealed that it will license Sandbridge Technologies' software-switched radio chips for its future cell phones. The chips are able to be reprogrammed on-the-fly to handle a number of different wireless technologies, such as CDMA, GSM, WiMAX, or LTE. This technology will allow cell phones to truly operate globally, switching to whatever the local technology is.

It's important to note, however, that while Sandbridge's chip is able to support different wireless technologies, it is not able to change the frequencies supported by the phone. This is limited by the actual antenna inside the phone, which might support 850/900/1800/1900/2100MHz, and could then use CDMA or GSM, for example, on any of those frequencies. [via VentureBeat]
