Archos to unveil an Android powered tablet sized smartphone

News by Michael Oryl on Monday February 09, 2009.

Archos, a company known for its high quality music and video media players, today announced that it will soon introduce an Android based "internet media tablet" that will feature full smartphone functionality with both voice and high-speed HSDPA/HSUPA 3G support.

The device will, according to the company, feature a 5-inch display and come with internal storage capacities as large as 500GB. Since flash storage of that size is not typically available for mobile devices, we are guessing that at the larger capacity versions of the device, at least, will make use of internal hard disk drives.

A Texas Instruments OMAP 3 platform processor is said to power the device, which Archos assures will offer laptop-like performance. The phone's internal battery is said to provide up to 5 hours of video playback performance, according to a separate story run by Pocket-Lint.

Archos estimates that the still unnamed device will be available in the third quarter of this year. No pricing information was given, and the company has yet to say when it will officially unveil the device and its specifications. [via AndroidAuthority]
