News by Michael Oryl on Wednesday January 14, 2009.
Today Motorola announced that it will cut an additional 4,000 jobs from its work force, 3,000 of those coming from its Mobile Devices unit. These job cuts are in addition to the 3,000 cuts that the company announced in the fourth quarter of 2008. The company claims that the combined job cuts and other cost-saving initiatives will result in a total savings for Motorola of US$1.5 billion.
Motorola's co-CEO and head of the Mobile Devices group, Sanjay Jha, said the following in a Motorola press release:
"The actions we are taking today in our Mobile Devices business will allow us to further reduce our cost structure and positions us for improved financial performance in 2009. Together with these actions and the announcements made in the fourth quarter, the Mobile Devices business expects to recognize annual cost savings of approximately $1.2 billion in 2009."
The company also released preliminary results for its fiscal Q4, 2008. Motorola expects to report sales of roughly $7.0 to $7.2 billion when it announces its official quarterly results on February 3rd. It also expects to report a loss of $.07 to $.08 per share.
