Apple approves third-party browsers at iPhone App Store

Newsbrief by Brian James Kirk on Wednesday January 14, 2009.

Several third-party web browsers were approved this week for availability at Apple's iPhone App Store. Before these releases, no third-party browsers had previously been available. Apple requires that developers submit applications which are then reviewed by an in-house quality assurance team. With submission dates ranging as far back as October 2008, it appears as if the browsers were approved together.

Although like iPhone's Safari web browser, the third-party browsers are WebKit-based, the approvals represent a possible loosening of restrictions to Apple's "duplication of functionality" policy. That policy stated that third-party applications that are similar to already bundled iPhone applications could be rejected. [via MacRumors]
