Verizon's open network to support Kindle competitors in 2009
Newsbrief by Ricky Cadden on Wednesday January 07, 2009.
Amazon may soon see competition for its wireless ebook reader, Amazon Kindle, on Verizon's network, according to Verizon executive Tony Lewis. In an interview with Reuters before the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, Lewis stated that the carrier is expecting to see a number of new devices for its open network in 2009, including launches of ebook readers from independent retailers.
Currently, there are 29 third party devices available through independent vendors on Verizon's network, though most are business-oriented devices for specific industries, such as health care. Verizon was once against allowing third party devices access to its network, but now supports the idea of an open network. [via MoCoNews.net]
