Samsung is making its own WiMAX and LTE chips

News by Ricky Cadden on Tuesday December 30, 2008.

In a move to reduce the amount of royalties it pays on its cell phones, Samsung has been working on its own 4G chipsets for cell phones. The company is working on both WiMAX(INFO) and LTE(INFO) chips, and is already sampling these to partners inside and outside the company.

Qualcomm owns most of the intellectual property around today's 3G cell phone networks, and thus gets a royalty for nearly every 3G phone produced. Earlier this year, Samsung reduced its reliance on Qualcomm's chips by using chips from Broadcom and Infineon. [via EETimes]
