MySpace launches streaming mobile video

MySpace announced last night that Myspace Mobile users can now stream video content uploaded to the site on their mobile devices. Mobile users can enjoy user-generated videos from their friends, family, and favorite artists along with branded content from channels such as TMZ, National Hockey League, National Geographic, The Onion, and College Humor. MySpace claims it is the first social portal to launch streaming mobile video content globally.

One-hundred percent of user-generated and branded content uploaded to the site is available, made possible by RipCode's On-Demand Transcoding technology. RipCode supports multiple codecs, bit rates, and resolutions without having to to store multiple versions of the same mobile video across servers.

While the technology supports popular devices such as the Blackberry Bold, Palm Centro, Motorola Q9, LG Voyager, Nokia N95, and Samsung Instinct, the service does not support Apple's iPhone. MySpace Mobile uses real-time transcoding technology instead of a progressive downloading system.
