IE 6 on 6 for Windows Mobile will only ship on new devices

Newsbrief by Ricky Cadden on Thursday November 13, 2008.

Khush from the Windows Mobile Team Blog has confirmed that Pocket Internet Explorer 6, commonly referred to as '6 on 6,' will not be made available as a separate download for existing Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphones. Pocket Internet Explorer is one area in which Windows Mobile 6.1 lags behind other smartphones, and it's been expected that the new version would be made available to download separately.

The post on the Windows Mobile Team Blog makes it clear that the new Pocket Internet Explorer 6 will only be available pre-installed in newer phones. The reason given relates to the rich media experience that the new browser enables, which in turn requires more powerful phones.

The post goes on to say that devices with the new Pocket Internet Explorer 6 should be on devices at the end of 2008 or the beginning of 2009, which is good news. There is also an emulator available here, if you'd like to get a taste for the experience. [via WMExperts]
