UIQ puts staff on notice pending shutdown

News by Ricky Cadden on Monday November 10, 2008.

The remaining 270 staff members at UIQ Technology were put on dismissal notice last Thursday, following a board meeting on Wednesday. UIQ Technology is the company behind the UIQ user interface for Symbian-based smartphones. Motorola and Sony Ericsson each own half of the company, but Motorola, which has plenty of its own troubles these days, is offering no financial support to the company.

Following the announcement of the new Symbian Foundation by Nokia earlier this year, the future of UIQ Technology has been in question. Sony Ericsson has stated that it will continue month-to-month financial support for UIQ Technology, allowing the exploration of options for the future of the company. [via AllAboutSymbian]
