T-Mobile G1 gets first OTA update Thursday

News by Michael Oryl on Wednesday October 22, 2008.

A post on the T-Mobile Forums today pointed out that less than 24 hours after its official retail launch, the new Google Android powered T-Mobile G1 will receive its first over the air software update. That's right, tomorrow G1 owners can start expecting to receive a text message that will inform them of the new update that will take their phone from Android RC19 to the current RC28 release.

While details are rather slim, the update is said to include a bug fix for the Amazon MP3 store and include several other "enhancements" for the G1.

Google also provided a few more details on how the Android Market application store is going to work. Developers will have to pay an initial US$25 registration fee, but after their account is approved they will be able to offer their free applications on the Android Market without further delay. In Q1 of next year paid apps will be allowed in the system, and the developers will retain 70% of the purchase price of apps, with the rest going toward carrier fees and processing fees. Google, for its part, takes nothing.

In other news, Texas Instruments has offered up its Bluetooth and WLAN drivers into Android's open source pool.
