Google releases Android as open source, Kyocera to build Android phone

Today Google made good on its promise to release its Android smartphone operating system as open source. The source code for the OS is now available from source.android.com and includes everything from the bootloader to the apps that run on the platform's desktop. With this information, any Tom, Dick, or Harry can relatively easily make fundimental changes to the way the Android OS operates, which could lead to all sorts of custom installations. In related news, Kyocera announced that it, too, is working on an Android based smartphone. The company today shed light on its cooperation with Wind River to build a new Android powered smartphone using some of Wind River's Linux based technologies.
