Report: 1.5 million T-Mobile G1 pre-orders

News by Ricky Cadden on Monday October 13, 2008.

T-Mobile announced the G1 last month as the first smartphone to be powered by Google's new Android operating system. The carrier began accepting pre-orders for the touchscreen-based G1 at the announcement, and has reportedly logged in over 1.5 million customers anxiously awaiting their new communication device, according to Fool.com.

AndroidAuthority.com, a site owned by MobileBurn, makes the case that these numbers don't seem to be based on any publicized data or generally known facts, and seem more likely to be based on a misunderstanding of T-Mobile's projections for 2008 sales, which were 400,000 to 500,000 units sold.

The T-Mobile G1, built by HTC and powered by the Android operating system, sports an arc-sliding touchscreen display that reveals a QWERTY keyboard. A 3.1 megapixel camera is on board, though there is no video recording ability, and a microSD card slot offers extra storage space on the G1.

The T-Mobile G1 is set to arrive in stores on October 22nd, priced at $179.99 with a 2-year commitment.
